The Law and Health Care Program - Faculty

Diane E. Hoffmann, J.D., M.S. is Professor of Law and the Associate Director of the Law and Health Care Program. Ms. Hoffmann's research interests include issues at the intersection of law, health care, ethics and public policy such as advance directives and termination of life support. She was a primary author of Maryland's Health Care Decisions Act dealing with advance directives, surrogate decision-making and guardianship for individuals lacking health care decision-making capacity. A video entitled The Maryland Health Care Decisions Act was also produced by Ms. Hoffmann. She has served as member of a number of ethics committees and is author of A Handbook for Nursing Home Ethics Committees published by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. While on leave from the law school, she served as the Acting Staff Director of the Senate Subcommittee on Aging and was responsible for all health care and aging legislation for U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski. A video entitled The Financial Exploitation of the Elderly was produced by Ms. Hoffmann with Dr. Patricia Powers. She received a grant from the Mayday Scholars Fund to undertake a study on pain management and managed care and is conducting that study in cooperation with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maryland.
