The Law and Health Care Program University of Maryland School of Law The Law and Health Care program was established in response to a growing demand for health and elder law expertise by lawyers and health professionals. For the past several years the program has been ranked as one of the top five health law specialty programs in U.S. News & World Report. Law and Health Care Program faculty have participated in a variety of legislative and advocacy initiatives including drafting legislation relating to end of life decision making, researched and written about the ethics of research testing on decisionally impaired individuals; ethics boards in nursing homes; nursing home regulation; Medicare HMO’s; managed care and the elderly; and genetic testing. In addition to scholarly articles, faculty have written and published and/or are working on handbooks for service providers and families on nursing homes, on adult guardianship; nursing home ethics committees; and on assisted living facilities. They have also produced two videos entitled, The Maryland Health Care Decisions Act and Financial Exploitation of the Elderly. Health Law Practicums and Externships The Program offers health law practicums and externships that enable students to work for health care institutions and agencies concerned with health law issues. Placements have included the National Institutes of Health, the American Nurses Association, National Senior Citizens Law Center and the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. Four full semester externships area available at the National Health Law Program, University of Maryland Medical System, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maryland and the Health Care Access and Cost Commission.
