Centers and Programs

The University of Maryland Baltimore is home to a number of nationally recognized interdisciplinary and interprofessional research and education programs and centers in geriatrics and gerontology. The Centers and Programs foster collaboration among faculty and staff from the University’s six professional schools.

GGEAR Program  - The Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program (GGEAR) is a state funded program located in the Office of Academic Affairs, University of Maryland, Baltimore. GGEAR, initiated in 1987, was funded in order to better prepare Maryland's health care professionals to care for frail, older individuals and to sponsor research projects which will ultimately produce interventions on behalf of this population.

University of Maryland Center For Research on Aging  -  The University of Maryland Center for Research on Aging was established as a result of the growth and development of collaborative research and training in critical areas of aging research and geriatric medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The Center’s mission is to coordinate and focus research and research training in aging at UMB that transcend traditional disciplinary lines in gerontology.

Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center  -  The focus of the UMB Pepper Center is to determine the physiological, biomechanical, neuromuscular and metabolic mechanisms by which exercise rehabilitation affects functional performance, and facilitate the translation of novel rehabilitation strategies into interventions that will  prevent the progression of chronic disease and disability with aging.The  UMB OAIC promotes the conduct of  multidisciplinary research in exercise rehabilitation of older people with Type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertensionand osteoporosis to prevent stroke, CVD complications and hip fracture  by providing the intellectual leadership and core resources to mentor the career development of junior faculty and trainees and  develop collaborations with investigators  that  will translate innovative rehabilitation strategies into clinical trials  to maintain  functional independence and  prevent the progression of chronic disease and disability with aging.

GRECC  - The primary focus of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Baltimore VA Medical Center examines the hypothesis that functional declines in cardiovascular and metabolic function leading to the development of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) with aging are predominately related to the influence of sedentary lifestyle, environmental factors and disease, and not biological aging processes.

Baltimore Hip Studies - Over the past 17 years, researchers in the Division of Gerontology have been conducting studies on recovery from hip fracture. The goal of this work is to describe changes which occur post fracture and identify ways to optimize recovery. This work has extended from examination of changes in functional ability to changes in bone mineral density, and examination of markers of bone turnover, and the design and evaluation of interventions to enhance recovery from hip fracture.

Long-Term Care Studies  - The Maryland Long-Term Care Project is an ongoing program of research being conducted in more than 60 Maryland nursing homes by investigators from the University of Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University, to understand and further the quality of life of persons residing in long-term care facilities.

Peter Lamy Center for Drug Therapy and Aging  - The Lamy Center is dedicated to improving drug therapy for aging adults through innovative research, education, and clinical initiatives.
