The School of Nursing

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing offers an upper division professional program that leads to the bachelor’s of science degree in nursing (BSN). Gerontology nursing content is in a “stand alone” core course as a critical element  in the baccalaureate curriculum. In 1999, the School of Nursing received the AACN/Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing Award for Exceptional Curriculum in Gerontologic Nursing. Emphasis areas, which include Healthy Aging, Frail Elderly, End of Life Care, and Leading and Managing in Long Term Care.  A series of seminar and web-based courses, provide students with opportunities for in-depth study in these selected areas of Gerontological Nursing.

The Gerontological Nurse Practitioner specialty is offered through the department of Organizational and Adult Health  nursing. Students are prepared as advanced practice nurses in geriatric and gerontologic care with expertise in diagnosis and management of common illnesses, disease prevention, and management of older adults with acute and chronic illnesses. The curriculum emphasizes course work, laboratory simulation and clinical experiences. Students work with faculty and nurse practitioner and physician preceptors in a variety of clinical practicum sites including life care communities, community clinics, ambulatory care facilities, subacute and long term care facilities, and private practices throughout the Baltimore- Washington area.

PhD PROGRAM
The program design allows students to focus on the study of the theoretical and empirical basis for nursing actions provided to clients/patients in a variety of clinical settings, or research which focuses on the study of nursing systems or the theoretical and empirical basis for educational, administrative and/or policy-related nursing actions. Individual research interests and career goals determine the emphasis area chosen. Depth of knowledge in the specialty area is developed through required course work and related clinical laboratory experience, selection of support electives, independent study and dissertation research.
