Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program Educational Products GGEAR has funded the development of educational videos, curriculum and has a CD Rom developed by faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore through a grant with the Bureau of Health Professions. The following products are currently available through the GGEAR Program or Video Press, University of Maryland, Baltimore: CD-ROM: Multidisciplinary Education in Gerontology and Aging (MEGA) is a series of computer based hypermedia learning modules developed by University of Maryland, Baltimore faculty with a grant from the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Research and Services Administration. The topics covered are: normal aging, case management, disease prevention, geriatric assessment, nutrition, pharmacotherapeutics, sensory problems, mental health, rehabilitation, hospice care, caregivers, elder abuse, ethical issues, health policy and oral health. The CD Rom can be used on Macintosh computers only. VIDEO: Brush Those Teeth and Dentures Mouth Care for the Dependent Elderly A 22 minute video tape developed by Janet Yellowitz, DMD, MPH, Director of Geriatric Dentistry, University of Maryland Dental School and produced by Video Press. The tape was developed for caregivers, nursing assistants, home health aides and family members of individuals who may be unable to follow directions and for those with behavior disorders. The 35 minute tape discusses health care decision making, features statements by families, health care professionals and members of the legal community who discuss cases and issues which lead to the passage of the Health Care Decision Act in Maryland. This 26-page monograph discusses the implementation of a falls prevention program in a long term care setting. Topics include: definition of falls, federal directives, components of a falls prevention program, guidelines for preventing falls, assessment for high risk to falls, nursing care plan; references and information on in service education on falls; assessment tools; and an outline of physiological changes associated with aging. Redwood Street, Baltimore, Md. 21201 Interdisciplinary Research Programs GGEAR has sponsored pilot grants submitted by University of Maryland, Baltimore faculty and graduate students for the past six years. Projects funded by GGEAR were implemented by interprofessional and/or interdisciplinary research teams. Over $3 million in grants and contracts to University of Maryland, Baltimore faculty have been received as a result of this small grants program. With the initiation of The University of Maryland Center for Research on Aging , GGEAR will now work collaboratively with the Center in advancing partnerships among disciplines in aging research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
